12/8 - Mashable

A lot of talk on Mashable about Facebook recently and righfully so, Facebook is showing up everywhere. The battle between Facebook and Twitter as the top social network continues as Facebook adopts another one of Twitters fuctions. I don't mind that each company is sort of mirroring one another, it makes both more convenient to use and encourages both to continue new features to keep them ahead of the game. The article about Vin Deisel and the other celebrities was intersting. Basically then discussed what we have in class about how to be successful and how to contiually brand yourself through your networks. It makes sense that Facebook is becoming popular for journalist because generally journalists write about what the public wants to hear. Where better to find out what the public wants than from the public itself on social networking sites like Facebook. Good thinking jounalists..

11/10 Mashable

Well what do you know there is stuff going on with the war that we haven't heard about... who would have thought? Really makes me wonder what else is all going on over there that nobody back in the states knows about. I think its a good idea that the royal family has been trying to keep up with social media even if they still aren't doing it well, they will most likely improve over time and with help from others. Maybe they should sit in on one of our SMO classes and hear about what it takes to be successful in the social media world. The online tv series sounds like a cool idea and just makes me think of Google TV, a lot of media is beginning to reach into other fields and I think this trend will continue to grow. It seems like the same thing for the new TV check in thing which seems very similar to Foursquare. I'm not exactly sure how it works though, and honestly it just doesn't sound that exciting to me.

11/3 Readings

I think it's a good thing that the older population is really beginning to adopt some of the social media sites. It will definitely help them stay connected with family and for many parents or grandparents I think that's all they're really looking for since so many children rarely get to spend much quality one on one time with family members anymore. I've still yet to get in on the whole Foursquare phenomenon, I think the idea of it sounds cool, and I like that you can even get discounts or deals at a number of places. However I think the phone that I have now is whats limiting me from participating in the game/social network. It's unreal how fast its grown, the one article said that it is now up to 3+ million users. I find this interesting because I only first heard about it in class like 2 or 3 weeks ago, where is everyone going to stay ahead of the social media trends is what I would like to know. I guess reading the Mashable articles is a good place to start.

Mashable 10-27-2010

The pictures that Malia made using different aspects of Google were pretty cool. I agree with some of the comments that people were making regarding the pictures especially with the guy who said Google should have these blown up and hung around the office. I don't feel that the Kanye story and his apology were very sympathetic. I love Kanye and think he's a sick rapper with good beats and tights verses and is always bringing something new to the rap game, but he is one of the most arrogant people ever and everyone knows that. I feel like he might have just been bringing that up to get a little attention for himself. Either way its good he "feels bad". I believe that putting an ap for newspapers on a smart phone or ipad would be a really good idea. I think a lot of people would benefit from it and really take advantage of it. It's more convenient than carrying around the real thing or having to sit at a computer to read.

Why would Mayer delete his twitter acount with that many follows. All his fans want to know what hes up to and hear about what hes working on that was an easy way for them to do that. I found the robbery article kinda funny actually. Who would be dumb enough to leave messages saying when they aren't going to be home. They probably should have something taken from them for being that dumb. Use your privacy settings and don't even talk about being home or gone. The who said it game sounds kind of funny but it is basically just asking you to judge somebody like the article says. I don't think I'd every really play it very often.

Mashable Readings for 10/6

The guidebook for Twitter users is ridiculous, I had no idea what half of the stuff was or that it even existed so I guess it's a good thing that they do have a guidebook to use for people like me who don't know a ton about the social network. Speaking of Twitter I think its crazy that 3% of the content on the site or tweets and retweets have to do with Justin Beiber. Apparently everyone really does have Beiber fever, although he just doesn't quite seem to do it for me.. All his songs kind of sound the same and seem to be about the same stuff. I guess you have to be a teenage girl to understand? I also thought the article on Zuckerberg  was kind of funny and I could see those geniuses having all kinds of little games and pranks that they pull off through the Website. I like that Angry Birds is getting some love, I have it on my ipod touch and play it all the time, hopefully they'll get the bugs worked out for the people trying to play it on their Android smart phones.

Mashable Readings

The mashable readings were sort of interesting. Zuckerberg donated a ton of money to a poor and under educated school system and I think that whether or not he did it to try and boost his image is beyond the point. Donating that much money is a big deal and is a great thing to do to help a school district out no matter what his reasoning may be. Previously I had never known anything about Dig, and after reading the article and learning about the problems they are having I don't think I will start to use the site either. As far as celebrity influence goes on twitter, I personally don't follow a ton of celebrities and could really care less what most of them are up to or have going on in their life, theres a few atheletes I keep an eye on durring certain seasons throughout the year but other than that they have very little influence on me as well.

Promoting Facebook Page

To help promote the GameZombie page on Facebook I did simple things like commenting on posts that had been put on the wall or liking different posts. I also shared some of the material on my own personal page and suggested a number of my friends become fans or like the page. I don't think any of my freinds were really bothered by it, because nobody really said anything about it or mentioned anything to me.

Semester Goals

A lot of this technology stuff is new to me and my biggest goal for this semester would be just to get a better understanding and knowledge of how it works and how it is used. Social media is becoming a huge part of society and I want to understand how and why it is influencing so many things. Also I would like to work to become the first hit on search engines when I perform a search for myself, not only that but like we discussed in class be able to control what comes up when I'm searched.

My Ego Surf

I figured I'd be farely easy to find using a search engine since my name is farely uncommon, turns out there's a few other Darin Heinrichs out there. I was however the first hit on a couple of different serches. Most of the results for me were either stuff that had been posted about me playing rugby at Whitewater or on some collegiate all-star teams. I couldn't find many pictures of myself though and the facebook link that came up wasn't me either.
